Cannot Send Email |
|
|
|
A few people have been calling the office with difficulties sending
email. There are many (and varied) reasons why this might happen as
there are lots of "links in the chain" between your outbox and your
recipient's inbox! Without going into lots of technical explanations,
here are some simple steps that seem to work for many people.
Anyway, for those that like a bit of DIY, here is a checklist for
those using Outlook:
1) Check that you can log into webmail
(http://www.yourdomain_name_here/webmail) with your email address as the
username, and your password as you know it. If you can, proceed to step
2. If you cannot, then you need to get a working password first.
2) If you have a working password, then open Outlook and go to "tools"
and then "email settings" (some versions call this "email accounts").
3) Select your email account, then click on "edit" or "properties"
(or something similar).
4) Ensure that your incoming mail
server is "mail.your_domain_name_here" . Most people will also use this
as their outgoing server. If yours is different - don't change it, it is
probably set differently for a reason. Note the SMTP (outgoing) server
name.
5) Click on "more settings" and go to the OutGoing server
tab.
a) IF your outgoing server is "mail.your_domain_name_here" -
then make sure the box marked "my server requires authentication" is
checked. Also mark (tick or check) the option that says "use same
details as my incoming server" (or something similar).
b) IF you
have a different server (eg. mail.bigpond.com.au) then you need to check
the option that says "my server requires authentication" and then enter
your user details that belong to that service. we will not have
these settings - you will need to find them yourself from your ISP.
6) IF you are using a laptop and check your mail from multiple
locations, you may want to consider the following settings:
a) set
your outgoing mail server (smtp) to "mail.your_domain_name_here"
b)
in the "more settings" section, set the outgoing mail as per # 5(a)
above
c) in the "more settings" section, go to the "advanced" tab
and change the SMTP port to Port 26 (normally set to port 25)
