We will be changing the focus of FNQ.net.au over the coming months.
As part of this change, we are closing sign-ups for new FNQ.net.au email accounts.
For existing FNQ.net.au account holders, nothing will change -- you'll keep your @fnq.net.au email account as long as you would like it. The annual rate is still $27.50.
Wait, what? How do I escape my ISP now?
Although we have closed sign-ups for new FNQ.net.au email accounts, there are other ways to have an ISP Independent Email Address.
- There are other email hosts that provide @a-different-domain.com email accounts for comparable prices.
- Get your own domain (best option for businesses).
Okay, if I want my email address to be

what do I need to do?
At bare-minimum, you must have a Domain Name and Hosting. Once you have both, you can have "anything-you-like"@your-registered-domain.com.
You can change host, change ISP, change pretty much anything... As long as you keep renewing the Domain, your email address is yours and you never need to change it again.
You can check if your desired domain name is available by visiting Domain Tools: http://whois.domaintools.com/
The Trinity Of Web
Some quick web-tech: To have a website up and running on the Internet, there's 3 things that need to exist:
- A Domain Name needs to be registered. Think of a Domain Name as your "Street Address", but on the world wide web. The Domain Name must be unique. When a Domain Name is registered, it is usually registered for a minimum of 1-2 years and becomes your "license" to use that name.
- Hosting. Hosting can be considered your "real estate" on the world wide web. It's storage space that can be used to hold website files, email, etc... This usually comes as either an annual or monthly cost.
- The Website itself. Once you have a Domain Name and a place to point it to (Hosting), a website is what the visitor sees. If there's no website, most hosts will have a single "webpage" that says "This domain has been registered" or it will just open a blank directory. To learn more about websites, please visit Rutten Technology Services.
What if you only have one or two of the three?
- If you have a Domain Name and no Hosting: You have the license to use the "address" on the web, but this doesn't go anywhere.
- If you have Hosting and no Domain: You'll have space on the web, but without a Domain Name, no one will know how to get to it.
- If you have a Website and no Domain nor Hosting: It's possible to have a fantastic website developed/designed, but with nowhere to put it and no way to tell people how to get to it... you get the picture. =)
When it comes to having a working email address, you only need a Domain Name and Hosting.
